About the artist

Meister Bertram

German International Gothic painter. His major work, the Grabow Altarpiece, a combination of carved figures and painted scenes, is one of the high points of late 14th-century north German art. By dividing the relatively limited space of the individual altar panels into a series of rectangular units, he was able to include a large number of Old and New Testament episodes in one painting. His lively narrative style, with expressive and forceful gestures, seems to have been influenced by Bohemian and French artistic trends.
