Abel Pann

Israeli artist. Born in Latvia, he was invited by Boris Shatz in 1913 to teach at Bezalel, and he brought with him the spirit of French Impressionism and a new range of color. He ended up in Europe during WWI and as a witness in 1916 to the pogroms in Russia he painted the series, “Road of Tears”, drawings and lithographs of the Russian pogroms.Most of Pann’s work after this time deals with the Bible. He began to use pastel colors, whereas formerly he had painted in oil. One of his main innovations was the use of local models, especially from among the Yemenite population, rather than the European figures used by most artists.
