Rembrandt (van Rijn)
Dutch baroque printmaker, painter and graphic artist. Born in Leiden, Rembrandt was one of the artistic geniuses of the West. He was a very active artist, and his work is multi-faceted. He left about 600 paintings and thousands of drawings and prints. Unlike his contemporaries, Rembrandt painted many different themes portraits, religious and allegorical themes, landscapes, and genre paintings, among them images of the Jews who lived in the ghetto near his home. He showed complete control of color, light and shadow, the intricacies of expression and movement, and a deep understanding of humanity.
