About the creation
Leipzig Mahzor (Vollers 1102/1, fol. 64v): Iti MeLevanon
Artist name: Unknown artist
The loving couple sits on a bench, on either side of a plant. He gestures indicating speech; he is wearing a Judenhut (Jews’ hat) and a long cloak. She wears a crown, a red dress with yellow sleeves and a round yellow badge, required of Jews throughout the middle ages. Both of their faces are distorted, perhaps to look like birds. Below them appears the Hebrew word “Iti”, the beginning of a liturgical poem based on the Song of Songs.
