Elimelech leads a laden donkey down a road leaving the city of Bethlehem. His wife Naomi rides on the donkey, looking forward forlornly. Their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion walk behind them. In the background, a dead camel and circling buzzards testify to the famine in Bethlehem.
